Worship at St Bartholomew the Less

Welcome to St Bartholomew the Less

It is called “Less” just to distinguish it from its larger neighbour, The Great. The Less is a chapel of ease within the Parish of Great St Bartholomew, and has a close relationship with St Bartholomew’s Hospital, situated as it is within the hospital grounds (inside the Henry VIII gate entrance in West Smithfield).

The church is open every day 08:00–19:00

We welcome all visitors. You are invited to spend time in the church in personal prayer whenever the church is open. If you have any special prayer requests, please write them in the blue book at the back of church. They will then be read out at the Eucharist on Tuesday lunchtimes.

We celebrate a friendly, family-styled Eucharist every Sunday at 10:00 with hymns and organ accompaniment.
  • Children of all ages are especially welcome to this service with their families and are encouraged to take part, even noisy toddlers!
  • Once a month, we gather for refreshments at the back of church after the service. Families are encouraged to help set this up.
  • We also have occasional parties in the 'Peace Park' outside the hospital gates in West Smithfield, and we have special celebrations at Christmas and Easter.
  • There is also the twice-a-year clean-up of the church on Saturday mornings, which also always turns into a party!
  • Services during the Week

Tuesdays: 1230 Holy Eucharist in St Bartholomew the Less
Low Mass celebrated usually by the Hospitaller (the priest on our staff attached principally to The Less)
Thursdays: 1230 Roman Catholic Mass in St Bartholomew the Less
A Roman Catholic Low Mass celebrated usually by the Roman Catholic Chaplain on the Hospital Staff

Please check the church diary for any current alterations to this schedule.
